Organ lessons

I somehow managed to convince a friend to teach me how to play the organ. I am not sure quite what I was thinking. We were standing at recess duty and I mentioned that I would like to learn to play the organ. I remember telling her, “I can already play all the hymns on the piano, so it shouldn’t be too bad.”

I wonder what she was thinking when I said that. Whatever it was she showed great restraint by not laughing at me. Maybe she is teaching me to play the organ because she wanted to smack me with the humility stick. I definitely deserved it.

Actually, I am not quite sure that I like it that much. The fingering is much different. Thumb glissandos, or whatever they are called, are as difficult for me to play as they are for me to spell. All that connecting the notes is a pain. And the pedals! Heaven help me, but I want to run screaming when I turn them on. So, I am going to learn fake organ for now. I know that true organists use the pedals, but I am a fake organist so it works.

Most of my practice time of late has been on the organ.  My poor piano has been neglected, but last night I sat down and brought out my Mozart. Oh, the beauty! I could move again. I could move quickly. The notes are beautiful and distinct. Yep, I think I like the piano better, but I am going to keep going on the organ. I would like to play for church someday. Someday would be  2 or 3 years from now. I am fine with that.

  1. “fake organize” !!! Tressa, you are so funny!

    • …and I can’t type organist

  2. Ask hubby about Bumpys I love you truly! LOL

  3. You are a glutton for punishment! But I’m sure you will be fantastic. :)

  4. Go Tressa Go! I’ve only ever been tempted when I hear an organist go to town on Bach on one of those grand pipe organs. I hate playing hymns enough on the piano (isn’t that terrible? but I love to sing them)
