The menu

I have found that having a menu really helps me save on the grocery bill not to mention my sanity. If I have a menu I can pick something off the list in the morning and make it for dinner that night. I usually make a menu for 2 weeks because I only do major grocery shopping every 2 weeks. I really don’t have the energy to do it more often than that. Fortunately, I have several grocery stores very close by if I need something real quick.

When I make my menu I add in some easy dinners. I need to be realistic. I know that I am not going to want to cook every night. It is my nature, so I plan for that. I know that processed foods are not good for me, but buying a package of chicken patties and some buns is a lot cheaper than the fast food that would be calling my name on a night that I don’t feel like cooking. If I plan for these nights, I don’t feel as guilty. I also have to plan for the nights that I am not going to be home until late. I don’t want to plan a roast that needs to cook for 3 hours if I am not going to be home until 4:30. These nights are crockpot or spaghetti nights. I really try not to use my processed foods for these nights because I always know that these days are coming. I can not count these as lazy nights because then when I am really lazy I won’t have the chicken patties to fall back on.

I planned my menu last Friday while I waiting for my son to get out of science class. I planned for two weeks. I also organized my coupons. I felt prepared going to the commissary. (Until I realized that I was going on a Saturday and a payday, but that is a whole ‘nother post! LOL) I did pretty well at commissary. I stayed close to my list and came out of there in budget! Whoo hoo!

I don’t know if anyone is interested, but I thought that I would post my menu. I like reading other people’s menus. It gives me new ideas. So, here you go.

  • Chicken Bow Tie Pasta
  • Taco Soup
  • Pork Roast Sandwhiches
  • Spaghetti
  • Tacos
  • Baked Potato Bar
  • Baked Fish and Veggie Packets
  • BBQ Shrimp
  • Hawaiian Ham Skillet
  • Crunchy Cashew Pork
  • Country Style Casserole (I have no idea what this is. I don’t remember. It is good thing I wrote down the cook book and the page number. Yikes!)
  • Chicken Parmesan
  • Papa Murphy’s Pizza

I don’t plan the sides for dinner unless there is really something that I want to try. I just make veggies or a salad. We usually have some kind of bread or potatoes and rice. The more basic I stay the easier it is on me.

Oh, and one more little tip. Keep your menus in a notebook. That way you can rotate your menus and it becomes easier to make a menu. I finally pulled out the menus in my notebook from 5 years ago. They were getting a little old and I wasn’t making those recipes anymore. LOL

  1. Looks wonderful.

Care to post the recipe for the chicken bowtie pasta?

  2. So, what is the country style casserole? I love a good casserole.

  3. Yes, what CC said

I like your menu. I really need to get back to this. What I need to do is create a 4 week set of menus for when hubby is at work and another for when he’s home.

The ones for when he’s away will be geared more towards foods the kids enjoy and when he’s home geared towards him.

All right this weekend I’ll do it, you don’t have to twist my arm or anything ;)

  4. It looks great, Tressa.
I like that you plan menu options for your “lazy” days. I really need to do this too. Usually when I have a lazy day we end up having breakfast for dinner.

  5. Hey guys, I will post those recipes for you soon. I think I will maybe do another page or put them in the side bar if I can figure that out. :)

  6. Ok, so what time is dinner? :)

I really need to start doing this too… I keep saying that don’t I? LOL But I do.

You are my type of gal. I agree about the processed foods, but I too need to plan those in… because I am like you… Just not always up for cooking a homemade meal.

Yes, I love recipes that go along with folks menu plans. I would love to see yours.

    See you Th.!:D

  7. I do one weekly. My hubby goes shopping every Sat. I don’t follow it though. I plan stuff for certain days and then I just switch stuff around. It makes it easier to budget and we only get what we need. My hubby is a stickler about that. He doesn’t buy junk food unless it is a special occasion and no matter how many times I put twinkies on the list he just skips over it. lol

  8. A person could starve on this menu. It’s missing “Burgers and fries”.

  9. Yeah, where is the chicken bow tie recipes? Looks very yummy. And what is Papa Murphy’s Pizza? Sounds store bought. Is that allowed? :D

  10. Never mind. I see you recipe in the extremely long recipe section. LOL Looks very good. :)

  11. LOL, Applie! I am working on that recipe page. I don’t know how to make multiple posts on a page. I am lost. It seems that I have to make a new page for more recipes. That seems silly. Can anyone help me?

Oh yeah, and Papa Murphy’s pizza is very allowed. It is a bring home and bake it at your house kind of pizza. You guys in Florida are missing out. It is yummy stuff.

  12. MMM! Sounds good to me!

  13. You can’t make multiple posts on a page. I made a page for my list of recipes. I either, post the recipes in the post section and link it on the page. Or I will make a new page, make the recipe list page it parent and put a link to it on the recipe list page. That makes no since at all. :(

    I’ll email you later. :)

  14. Don’t worry Tressa, I am techno-impaired and haven’t figured that out yet either, whic is why my recipe page is so scant. I can’t figure out how to do it either!

  15. I just love it when you pretend to be organized. It is so cute! Wait a minute – where is Taquito Nite? LOL You do much better at the commissary than I do. I go with a plan and a list, but somehow I never come home with anything on it. I might plan to have tacos, but the asparagus is beautiful so I put some in the cart. Asparagus does not go with tacos so I have to buy a roast or maybe pasta, and if I go with the roast I need to buy sesame seeds so I can make the kids’ favorite bread but if I go with the pasta I need to buy heavy cream and a block of parmesan. Either way, I have no money left over for tacos. Or sometimes I buy the asparagus but nothing to go with it, and we end up eating it with baked potatoes and bacon.

By the way, I don’t know what Hawaiian Ham Skillet is, but it sounds nasty!

Well, you don’t have to eat it! LOL
